McDonough x frog and Haddy
Cradle to Cradle® reimagines design through nature’s lens, where waste becomes a resource, energy is endlessly renewable, and diversity drives resilience. Developed by architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart, it challenges us to create in ways that give back more than they take. At frog, we share this vision: creation must be regenerative by design, and human by experience. This means using healthy materials that can safely return to nature or re-enter the manufacturing cycle. It also means engineering for durability, anticipating end-of-use and next-use, designing for disassembly and enabling closed-loop systems through reuse, repair, recycling or composting.
In collaboration with William McDonough and 3D-printed furniture pioneer, Haddy, frog developed Twist, a joyful, extensible furniture system designed for personalization and change. Centered around an iconic, oversized helical column, Twist transforms into seating, tables, storage or dividers. Designed to move with people through life, Twist grows, shifts and invites continual reinvention. By embodying Cradle to Cradle DesignTM principles, Twist shows how design can enable products to be continually renewed rather than discarded. It sets a new standard for furniture, and offers a hopeful, human-centered vision for how design can shape a regenerative future.
Design that encourages people to cherish, repair and reimagine extends a product’s life and supports a regenerative future
Project highlights
Make regeneration tangible
Bring Cradle to Cradle Design principles to life through a furniture collection that is not only regenerative, but also iconic and joyful.
Joyful, modular and circular
We developed Twist, an extensible system made from non-toxic biomaterials. Designed for disassembly, each piece is supported by a digital product passport and take-back program that enable repair, reuse and material reintegration, extending life at every stage of use.
Furniture that evolves
Twist proves that circular design can be both joyful and regenerative. Its iconic form encourages continued use, while its materials and take-back program (guided by Cradle to Cradle Design principles) set a new standard for regenerative products.
Nature doesn’t have resources… Nature has sources. It is the job of humans to turn sources into resources for optimal use and reuse.
Twist features an iconic, oversized helical column that serves as both a visual anchor and a structural core. Infinitely extendable and paired with a wide array of accessories, it enables a variety of functions and spatial configurations. With Twist, we bring together the worlds of architecture and industrial design, borrowing the timeless, classical columns of grandeur but bringing them down to human scale in a way that’s modular and expressive.
The collection encourages users to experiment and play with their space, composing unique structures for seating, storage and display. With Twist, people can transform their environment in ways that feel fresh and inspiring. As people’s needs evolve, Twist adapts with them, offering the flexibility to be used in new ways rather than being replaced. Its open-ended system is playful, personal and empowering, encouraging people to shape with creativity.
Twist brings William McDonough’s Cradle to Cradle Design framework to life by uniting emotional durability, material health and circular design. Starting with people, we created a furniture system that is adaptable and extensible by nature—encouraging reconfiguration, repurposing and play. This open-ended flexibility prolongs usefulness and reduces the likelihood of waste, fostering a regenerative loop where design invites ongoing interaction rather than disposal.
Crafted from a singular, non-toxic mono-material, Twist uses a polymer selected for its alignment with Cradle to Cradle material health principles—prioritizing environmental and human safety. Twist is produced through robotic 3D printing guided by AI, using an additive process that minimizes material waste and energy use. Manufactured locally and on demand, each piece avoids the environmental impacts of mass production and long-distance shipping.
Designed for easy disassembly, each component can be separated and reprocessed into new products, ensuring materials stay in circulation and retain value beyond the first owner. Every item is labeled with an RFID tag, linking to a digital product passport with details on materials, repair and return pathways. Our take-back program ensures components are either composted or reintegrated into new designs—reinforcing the principles of regeneration and closing the loop.
The Twist collection proves that Cradle to Cradle Design principles don't limit creativity—they elevates it, transforming regenerative design into a source of beauty, joy and lasting impact.
Born from the collaboration between frog, William McDonough and Haddy, Twist is an iconic furniture system that not only minimizes environmental impact, but actively contributes to a regenerative future. It’s a blueprint for a future where creativity and regeneration go hand in hand.
This project exemplifies frog’s commitment to sustainability, proving that regenerative design can be both beautiful and practical.
